Once upon a time, when I was a child, my father was a book salesman. He would leave home dressed in a suit and tie with his large metallic briefcase full of books. He carried it in his right hand. If I close my eyes, I can still see him from my window in the distance disappearing until out of sight. Upon his return, he would open the briefcase; the click of the locks unlocking lives in my soul as a memorable sound. The briefcase had black leather details and it smelled of new books, adventures, encyclopedias, children’s stories, classic literature, and more. I would inhale wishing to suction the book’s content in one try. He always gifted me a book and my mom would read to me at bedtime. That was the happiness of my childhood.

I don’t know if you knew, but March 7th was World Book Day, February 21st was International Mother Language Day, and March 2nd was Dr. Seuss’ birthday. All these special dates made me want to share the books I read for my daughter’s Spanish class. The Cat in the Hat, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, and The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog. These books are my children’s favorites.

Speaking of books, the girls and I are writing a novel set in a faraway magical land where forest animals are the protagonists. I need names for my characters and this morning while running on the treadmill, undisturbed, two names came to mind: Luciano and Gumaro. Original right? These fantastical names belonged to the two boys who were my first experience with unrequited love. Luciano was my first crush between 5th and 6th grade; my little heart loved him so much. Gumaro was my second crush between 7th and 8th grade. I think they enjoyed me liking them, but they relished their rejection of me. I have decided to use these two names for a mouse and a bat. How’s that? I haven’t decided which animal corresponds to which name, but I’ll keep you posted.

Cuando era niña, mi papá vendía libros. Se iba vestido de traje con su portafolio, que era grande y metálico con detalles de piel color negro, lo llevaba en su mano derecha lleno de libros y de un deseo infinito de venderlos. Cierro los ojos y todavía puedo verlo desde mi ventana en la distancia perdiéndose poco a poco hasta desaparecer. No es por nada, pero se veía muy guapo mi Pá. Cuando volvía, abría el portafolio y el clic de los candados abriéndose es aún un sonido maravilloso. Su portafolio olía a libros nuevos, a aventuras, enciclopedias, cuentos infantiles, literatura clásica y más que me hacían respirar profundo, como si pudiera inhalar todo su contenido en un intento. En fin, él siempre me regalaba un libro y luego mi mama me lo leía antes de dormir. Esa fue mi felicidad infantil.

No sé si supieron, pero el 7 de marzo fue el día mundial de la lectura, el 21 de febrero fue el día internacional de la madre lengua y el 2 de marzo fue el cumpleaños del Dr. Seuss. Todos estos eventos combinados me han hecho querer compartir con ustedes los libros que leí para esta ocasión. El Gato Ensombrerado del Dr. Seuss, No Dejes que la Paloma Maneje el Autobús y La Paloma Encuentra un Perro Caliente del escritor Mo Willems. Estos libros han sido los favoritos de mis hijos y a mí me gusta mucho leerlos en español.

Hablando de libros, las chicas y yo estamos escribiendo un libro juntas, es un cuento fantástico en una tierra lejana con animalitos. Necesitada de nombres para dos personajes, esta mañana corriendo en la treadmill sin distracciones me acordé de dos nombres espectaculares: Luciano y Gumaro. Si te estás preguntando de dónde saqué tales nombres, te diré. Pues fueron mis primeros dos amores no correspondidos. Luciano fue el primer crush de mi vida en la pasada del quinto al sexto grado. No se imaginan cuánto lo amé. Gumaro fue el segundo, lo amé en la secundaria: segundo y tercer año. Bueno, supongo que a los dos les alagaba saber que me gustaban, pero creo que encontraban un placer malévolo en mostrar su desdén hacia mí. Esas fueron mis primeras dos lecciones del rechazo amoroso. En fin, he decidido que sus nombres los usaré en nuestro cuento de animalitos en el bosque. Creo que les quedarían bien al ratoncito y al murciélago. ¿Cómo ven? No he decidido qué nombre le corresponde a cuál pero luego les cuento.
